How to choose a concrete texture

A useful texture has to do more than look convincing in one image. Check how the surface behaves across the full object, at the intended scale, and under the lighting used by the final scene.

Choose the finish before the damage

Start with smooth, polished, rough, precast, or poured concrete, then add stains and cracks that fit the setting. This keeps the base material readable beneath the wear.

Match aggregate and joint scale

Aggregate size, formwork marks, panel seams, and tie holes reveal scale immediately. Compare them with doors, people, or props in the scene before finalizing UV density.

Use cracks as supporting detail

Large unique cracks repeat visibly across broad surfaces. Favor subtle base damage and add hero fractures with decals or layered masks where the composition needs them.

Let roughness carry the material

Concrete is non-metallic, so believable roughness variation matters more than metallic response. Normal and height should describe pores, aggregate, joints, and real surface relief.

Which maps are useful for a PBR concrete material?

Most concrete materials use base color, normal, roughness, ambient occlusion, and optional height or displacement maps. Metallic should normally remain black because concrete is a non-metal surface.

Can these concrete textures be used in Blender, Unity, or Unreal Engine?
